2024 Greenline Invitational Singles Wrap
Bowls ACT wish to thank Queanbeyan Bowls Club for hosting a fantastic event!
After chaotic wind on the first day, the 2024 Greenline Invitational Singles came down to an elite final four section winners; Garry Charker (Canberra), Mac McLean (Weston Creek), Flynn O’Shaughnessy (Canberra) & James Reynolds (Wildcard).
Semi Final – Garry Charker vs Mac McLean
With both players undefeated through the sectional rounds a winner was hard to predict with Mac jumping out to an early lead. Garry was able to bounce back and got on a run that saw go from 9-12 down to 23-12 up within 7 ends. Mac put up a fight and wasn’t willing to let the game go but the strength and class of Garry saw him run out with a 25-15 win, booking his place in the final.
Semi Final – Flynn O’Shaughnessy vs James Reynolds
The game between Flynn and James resembled a game where it was the master against the apprentice. It was back and forth for the first hour, but with James leading 8-6 he flicked the switch and turned up the heat skipping out to a 15-7 lead within a matter of ends. “Jimmy” kept his foot on the pedal, running out to a 22-9 lead before he was able to close out the game 25-12 and book his spot in the 2024 final.
Third Place Playoff – Mac McLean vs Flynn O’Shaughnessy
The two young guns could easily have been in the final of the event, but while it was not to be today, Mac and Flynn gave a great account of themselves and will only benefit from the experience in the build up to The Nationals. The duo played out a thrilling third place playoff with scores going back and forth until the 15th end when mac was able to pick up a 4, giving him the momentum. With 6 of the last 9 ends going the way of Mac, he was able to prevail 25-19.
Final – Garry Charker v James Reynolds
The final was a battle from the outset with Reynolds jumping out of the blocks quickly, claiming 4 out of the opening 6 ends. Garry was able to fight his way back into the contest, making up for a slow start and hitting the front 5 ends later. Once Garry hit the front, he didn’t look back and managed to keep James at bay. While James did his best to mount a late fightback it was not to be in 2024 with Garry Charker holding his nerve to claim back to back Invitational Singles titles.
